Though he may be dedicated to convention, Trey Songz has a personal flourish on full display on Trigga that was previously less noticeable. The album is not likely to impress or inspire a savvy listener who has been attuned to this style for years, but it is consistently good enough to regard it as one of the stand-out R&B albums this year and easily the greatest showcase of the artist’s talent to date. Kelly’s uniquely balanced blend of both trashy and charming sexual innuendo - and combines them into a derivative, but no less satisfying sound.
For Trigga, he takes from the two most emulated voices in contemporary R&B - the lush arrangements central to the-Dream’s aesthetic and R. Trey may not be the most original voice in contemporary R&B, but he has undisputed talent. Trigga is successful not because it takes a fresh approach or carries an important message, but rather because it so effortlessly epitomizes the modern R&B genre as it currently exists, without any pretense or delusion of importance. Trey Songz, having just released Trigga, his sixth LP, is decidedly not a new voice, and though he apparently has no interest in rattling the cage of classic R&B, he’s still capable of making a strong album.

Trey Songz is now a veteran in his industry, his confidence isn’t wavered and his experimenting isn’t stagnant, this album delivers. It’s catchy, captivating, and easy to listen to. Trigga is well thought out and shows a big deal of artistic development. But what’s most surprising is his collaboration with Justin Bieber on the “Foreign (Remix).” THE BREAKDOWN These are the songs that have catapulted Trigga’s career in the past. “Dead Wrong,” produced by The Featherstones features up and comer Ty Dolla $ign, and “Late Night” produced by Mike WiLL Made that features Juicy J are some of the certified club bangers with a signature trap inspired beat of 808 drums that has become so popular and that continue to give off that raw, urban sound. There are a lot of accomplices that help quality, like the familiar voice of Nicki Minaj. Trey, without question, has a demanding and soulful voice that’s distinctive and perfect for the world of R&B music, but he structures his vocals through hip-hop inspired tracks where he’s heavy on bridges and sings over his background vocals which sonically makes his music have a more dramatic effect like on “I Know (Can’t Get Back).” Then he switches that exact flow back around and is still able to remain his dominance on smooth head bobbing records like “All We Do” & “Y.A.S.” “You say you can’t have cake and eat it too, but ain’t that what you supposed to do?”Although sex appeal continues to be a source of focus, there are tracks like “Yes, No, Maybe” that evokes psychological differences between the mind and the heart, “Disrespectful” that examines ulterior motives, and hit “Smartphones” that discusses what happens when you get caught and the importance of the little white lie.
The album opens up with “Cake,” and Trey makes it clear that he wants it all. And this artist continues to sell it in various forms, from both physical and mental perspectives, which is easily seen within his suggestive lyrics.
This time around, Trigga displays the consistency and creativity of his work ethic and how when you find a method that works, it’s wise to stick with it and then build from it. Trey Songz has come a long ways, from cornrows and love songs, to star status and a healthy catalog to show for it.
